Fleet maintenance

A depot services a fleet of cabs, trailers or other vehicles. It checks each one in, fuels it, weighs it, maintains it and checks it out again. It has to record each step against the right vehicle.

How the original system could serve it

A tag on each vehicle would open the depot's gate with no hands involved. The same tag could allow fueling and start a weighing, and each step would go into the records on its own. The old site had commercial, government and private fleets in mind.

Readers in the parking lots, the depot and the storage yards would keep track of where each vehicle stood. Because the tag named the vehicle, every job would go on the right vehicle's record. The fleet's history would build up as the work went on.

Vehicles could take tags such as the compactTag. The Standard Reader's relay outputs could drive a lock, and its contact inputs could sense a door.

What a builder would need

A builder would need a tag for each vehicle, and readers at the gate, the fuel island and the scale. Host software would tie them to the depot's maintenance records. The fuel pumps and the scale have controls of their own, and the builder would need a way to connect the reader to each.

Building one today

Nobody has rebuilt the original hardware recently, so nobody knows whether the old files still make a working system. The TigeRFID project's study of the original found firmware for the sealTag only, and the rebuild's sealTag is a new design. A rebuild writes all of its firmware fresh.

The TigeRFID project is rebuilding the system from the ground up, for a complete beginner with free tools. To build your own, start at the TigeRFID repository, whose readme tells where the rebuild stands.

Nothing on this site says a rebuild may transmit on the original radios' frequencies as they are. Radio rules differ by country, and the TigeRFID project checks them before it chooses a rebuild's radios.

If you build one, or try, please report back in the repository's issues. What works and what fails both help the next builder.
